Der Film ist ein südafrikanischer Dokumentarfilm, der die Nachwirkungen von Holocaust und Antisemitismus aber auch der Apartheid, kolonialer Gewalt, des heutigen Rassismus und Israel/Palästinas anhand der verflochtenen Geschichten von südafrikanischen und deutschen Gesprächspartner*innen erforscht, die Teil von Erinnerungskämpfen sind. Er zeigt Brüche und Zusammenhänge zwischen Ideologien und Strukturen und ergründet die Rückkehr von „white supremacy“ und Faschismus in der heutigen Zeit. Ausgehend von der Familiengeschichte von Heidi Grunebaum bewegt sich der Film zwischen Südafrika und Deutschland und von dort auch zu der umstrittenen Bedeutung, die Israel für die deutsche Erinnerungspolitik hat.
Die Filmemacher*innen Mark Kaplan (Emmy Award-ausgezeichneter Regisseur) und Heidi Grunebaum (Autorin und Erzählerin) sind jüdische Südafrikaner*innen, deren Familien vor den Nazis ins südliche Afrika geflohen waren und die sich seit vielen Jahren zu Menschenrechtsverbrechen, Antirassismus und postkolonialer Gerechtigkeit engagieren.
Film (96min) und Diskussion (60min) sind in deutscher und englischer Sprache mit Übersetzung.

Post-Apartheid Perspectives on (German) Memory Struggles and the Politics of the Present
This South African documentary explores the aftermath of the Holocaust and antisemitism, as well as apartheid, colonial violence, contemporary racism, and the Israel/Palestine conflict through the interwoven stories of South African and German interviewees involved in a range of memory struggles. It highlights fractures and connections between ideologies and structures and explores the return of ‘white supremacy’ and fascism today. Using Heidi Grunebaum’s family story as a portal, the film explores these wider issues as it moves between South Africa and Germany and from there to the controversial significance that Israel has for the German politics of remembrance.
Filmmakers Mark Kaplan (Emmy Award winning director) and Heidi Grunebaum (writer and narrator) are both Jewish South Africans whose families fled from the Nazis to southern Africa and who have been committed to dealing with human rights crimes, anti-racism and postcolonial justice for many years.
The screening (96 minutes) and discussion (60 minutes) will be held in German and English with translation.
