We are honoured to have a workshop with Mariam Naiem, a Ukrainian cultural researcher and writer of Afghan descent. She is the author of How to Breathe Freely: A Guide to Decolonization and co-author of the graphic novel A Brief History of a Long War. She has contributed to Decolonization: Essays from Ukraine.
This workshop will look at how grief and remembrance function together, and why the decision of what to remember is one of the most consequential decolonial acts available to us. Drawing on the Ukrainian context and on the stages of decolonization described in Mariam’s book, we will ask what it means to reclaim the right to mourn on one’s own terms.
The session combines a lecture with practical work in pairs, where participants will bring their own contexts into the conversation.

Es ist uns eine Ehre, einen Workshop mit Mariam Naiem zu veranstalten, einer ukrainischen Kulturforscherin und Autorin afghanischer Herkunft. Sie ist Autorin von „How to Breathe Freely: A Guide to Decolonization“ und Mitautorin des Comics „A Brief History of a Long War“.
In diesem Workshop geht es darum, wie Trauer und Erinnerung zusammenwirken und warum die Entscheidung, woran wir uns erinnern, einer der folgenreichsten dekolonialen Akte ist, die uns zur Verfügung stehen. Ausgehend vom ukrainischen Kontext und den in Mariams Buch beschriebenen Phasen der Dekolonialisierung werden wir uns fragen, was es bedeutet, das Recht zurückzugewinnen, auf eigene Weise zu trauern.
