Filmscreening & Discussion | Sunday, 15th Februars | 4pm | IZ Dresden
We invite you to a screening and discussion on the structures of the contemporary imperialist domination of the USA in Latin America. How European media (mis)frames these realities, and how this framing shapes our own positioning toward countries under imperialist attack.
Contemporary imperialism operates not only through direct colonial administration, but also through economic warfare, financial strangulation and manufacture of social instability. The gap between “rich” and “poor” nations is widened as resources and wealth are consistently drained from the Global South in order to sustain capitalist relations.
How do we understand imperialism against sovereign development? What does it mean to ground anti-imperialist struggle with anti-militarist demands? Emancipation from all forms of oppression and exploitation is a common struggle, and therefore internationalist solidarity needs to confront hybrid warfare in all its forms.
We critically engage with excerpts from the documentary “Make the Economy Scream” (Moviementa, 2019) which offers a case study of the above themes in the case of Venezuela, and invite everyone to participate with us later in a dialogue.
Released in 2019, the documentary is the work of a greek independent journalist that looks at the forms of propaganda used by contemporary imperialist powers from Latin America all the way to the heart of Europe.
Film has english subtitels and discussion will be in english.
